Here at turtleneck.net, the editors believe in a variant definition for the word "essay". In grade school and at University, many times we are led to think of the essay as some painful undertaking designed to prove our ability to parrot lectures back at the instructor.

We would like to return to an older, more elegant sense of the word:

es-say ('e-"sA), n. [Middle English, from Middle French essai, ultimately from Late Latin exagium act of weighing, from ex- + agere to drive]
2a: effort, attempt; especially : an initial tentative effort
b: the result or product of an attempt

We therefore encourage potential submittors to go forth in a spirit of intellectual adventure when writing an essay for turtleneck.net. Do not feel that you have anything to prove, or that you must arrive at any definitive conclusions. Put your intellect to the test, and see where you end up. We'll love you for it.
